Closed-Door Seminar I: New Role and New Position:  Development of Shanghai as an International Financial Center under the “Dual Circulation” Framework

Recently Chinese leadership has proposed the “dual circulation” development strategy that takes domestic circulation as the mainstay, with domestic and international circulation reinforcing each other. As an international financial center, how should Shanghai strengthen its roles as a “central hub” and “strategic linkage” in these circulations? How should Shanghai define its positioning and areas of competence? Externally, how to better align with existing international rules to lay an institutional foundation for higher-level opening? Internally, how to lead the Yangtze River Delta region in building up competitiveness in global asset allocations, foreign capital attraction and multi-level capital market development so as to support the region’s high-quality development?

09:00

Theme Interpretation

Global economy is gradually recovering from COVID-19. The pandemic has accelerated reshuffle of global supply chains, and generated new business models and areas. Major economies have maintained zero or even negative interest rates. Meanwhile, the rising trend of digitalization is reshaping the global financial ecosystem and investment patterns. What kinds of new challenges and opportunities will global asset allocation face? China is the first country to recover from the pandemic and has been actively continuing the opening of its financial sector amid the anti-globalization wave. With assets being allocated globally, what are the comparative advantages and attractions of the Chinese market? What can Chinese and foreign financial institutions do to balance competition and cooperation under the new normal?

Moderator: SUN Mingchun   Chief Economist, Haitong International Securities

14:00 – 15:00

Theme Interpretation

With anti-globalization trend on the rise and massive monetary and fiscal stimulus unseen before, global asset allocation and investment strategies are facing bigger challenges. How do prolonged low interests, even negative rates, and expansionary fiscal policies throughout the world affect the returns on various types of assets? How to adjust asset allocation strategies to respond to these changes? The Covid-19 pandemic has brought profound changes to many industries, e.g. online services have boomed, and global supply chain is going through a reshuffle. How will these changes affect the asset allocation strategies of institutional investors? The opening of China’s financial sector has been unprecedented, how will foreign financial institutions adjust their asset allocation strategies globally?

What is the focus of China’s capital market reform in the next stage? How will Chinese residents and families adjust their asset allocation strategies in a growing market? Moderator:SONG Yuqin Vice Chairman of Shanghai Gold Exchange

20:00

Theme Interpretation

In April 2016, the RMB-denominated Shanghai Gold Benchmark launched by Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) played a complementary role to LBMA and COMEX gold prices, thus significantly enhanced the price discovery mechanism of the global gold market.

In October 2019, the listing of NYAuT+N contracts and Shanghai Gold Futures contracts by SGE and CME, the successful outcome of the two exchanges’ cross-market cooperation project, ushered in a new era of the collaboration among international gold markets.

The world today is still facing unprecedented financial turbulence, heightened geo-political and economic uncertainties. We are now, more than ever, in need of a collective response to address these challenges. To this end, SGE will host a live virtual cloud session that brings together senior executives  in global gold market to provide you valuable insights into how China’s gold market shall continue to open wider and how London, New York and Shanghai, the biggest OTC, Futures and Physical gold trading hubs, can work in a concerted efforts for a brand-new future of the global market.
